The Met OfficeAdd this

The Met Office Headquarters in Exeter was designed, built and is managed by a G4S-led consortium

The project, worth £150 million including construction costs and operating support services, involved one of the biggest IT moves in Europe and saw 1,150 staff move from their existing premises to the new 57,000 m2 Headquarters.

The Met Office relies on maintaining a 24-hour, 365 day-a-year operation. G4S is responsible for ensuring this resilience of service for all of the support requirements for the building and its staff over the initial contract. The wide range of hard and soft facilities management services are managed through a Customer Service Centre supported by a Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system.

Partnership working

G4S works in close partnership with our customer, listening to their evolving needs and challenges and working together to find continuous improvement solutions. In order to improve energy efficiency at the Met Office, the G4S team operate within the client’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management accreditation and were recently involved in joint initiative where they identified 37 programmes which, by a conservative estimate, could offer a £0.25 million saving.

Quality standards

The team at the Met Office have worked tirelessly to gain and retain external registrations and awards for their processes and service delivery against internationally recognised standards. These include:

  • ISO 9001 QMS
  • Investors in People
  • Customer Services Excellence (G4S at the Met Office were the first private sector organisation to achieve CSE)
  • OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management System
