The Championships, Wimbledon – A world class performance
A major sporting event like Wimbledon, with approaching half a million spectators and the world’s media on the doorstep, requires expertise across the whole security spectrum, from crowd management and surveillance against terrorist and security threats to combating counterfeit tickets, escorting the biggest stars in the game, and protecting the ultimate prize, the famous Wimbledon silverware.
Planning starts as soon as the previous year’s event is complete and every member of the G4S team goes through extensive training, including an induction into the All England Club, and both site and role-specific briefings
As The Championship approaches, attention turns to the job of integrating each aspect of the event’s security, while making the experience one to remember for every visitor. The Corral system, for example, allows early-morning entry to the site to speed up the flow of visitors and reduce queuing times.
G4S co-ordinates its capabilities through a central command room, controlled by the club, which monitors the queues, gate problems and popular crowd spots while, at the same time, linking G4S’s team into the emergency services.
Nowhere is the trust placed in G4S by the tournament more evident than in the company’s role escorting the world’s top tennis players, ensuring safe passage through the crowds to the court and shadowing players through medical testing.
