The UK’s largest cash delivery fleet pilots solar panels to reduce vehicle emissions
G4S Cash Services (‘G4S’), the leading provider of cash solutions in the UK, is taking the lead among van fleet users in reducing its carbon emissions by introducing an innovative three month pilot scheme in Birmingham to test the benefits of solar technology.
The photovoltaic module is incorporated into a panel on the roof of a cash delivery vehicle and will produce enough sustainable energy to power the vehicle’s ancillary electrical energy usage.
G4S has one of the largest vehicle fleets in the UK and due to the number of complex security systems, each vehicle requires a constant energy input when the couriers are making their cash deliveries and collections, necessitating a feed from the engine when stationary and using additional fuel in the process.
However, through working closely with a leading UK specialist manufacturer, a solar panel has been integrated into the design of its armoured vehicle that is both cost effective and enables the vehicle’s engine to be switched off while ensuring the security systems are fully effective.
John Lennox, Head of Fleet Management, G4S Cash Services (UK) said: “These solar panels could reduce our carbon emission output by around 900 t/CO2 per year if we incorporate them across the whole of the UK Cash Services fleet. We estimate that the costs saved on fuel would pay for our initial investment within the first ten months. Providing the three month trial is a success, we’ll introduce the panels to new vehicles in 2010, with a view to retro-fit the current fleet in a planned programme over the following year.”
