Healthcare Logistics - Specialist Medical Service Add this

G4S provides transport services for patients in need of higher levels of medical attention, ensuring patients travel in comfort and without detriment to their health

Overview

G4S is one of the UK’s largest private sector operators of non-emergency patient transport services.  We have extensive contracts to deliver patient journeys, and provide over 700,000 journeys per year using fleets of specially constructed ambulances and skilled, motivated crews.

In response to a growing need from our customers we launched a new Specialist Medical Service in 2009.  The service uses specially trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to transport vulnerable patients and those in need of higher levels of clinical care.

The services are available to both contracted and non-contracted customers.

Specialist vehicles

Our vehicles are designed around the needs of our patients. They are equipped with medical equipment including oxygen, non-invasive cardiac monitoring equipment and traction splints.

Our ambulances have been designed to carry patients in the most comfortable way possible and to ensure that patients with delicate medical requirements are properly cared for.  The vehicles can accommodate patients on stretchers and can

be adapted for neo-natal baby monitors and patients travelling in wheelchairs.

One of the hospitals we work with has a specialist bariatric centre for treatment of very heavy patients, and our vehicles are designed to accommodate bariatric patients, either on a stretcher or in their own specialist wheelchairs.

Highly skilled staff

Our Emergency Medical Technicians are fully vetted and trained to deliver excellent care to vulnerable patients.  Crews consist of two to six people, depending on the medical need of the patient to be transported.

EMTs receive high levels of first aid training including resuscitation and first person on the scene (FPOS).  Our crews monitor the status of the patients closely throughout the journey.  If a patient’s condition deteriorates during a journey, EMTs are trained to operate under blue lights to convey the patient to a hospital as quickly and safety as possible.

Journey scheduling and control

Specialist Medical Service journeys are scheduled and controlled by a dedicated team, operating out of our 24 hour control room.

The specialist vehicles are electronically tracked.  Real time tracking data allows us to plan journeys effectively, improving scheduling efficiencies and enabling detailed reporting which can help our customers manage costs.  It also allows us to instantly locate a vehicle should there be an incident or a patient’s condition start to deteriorate.

Awards and registrations

The G4S Healthcare Logistics contracts hold the British Safety Council (BSC) Five Star standard, ISO 9001:2008 registration and Investors in People.
