County-wide non-emergency patient transport services
G4S is the first organisation to deliver county-wide patient transport services and provides services to all NHS Trusts in the county of Surrey and its borders
Surrey Primary Care Trust issued the first contract to cover non-emergency patient transport services for an entire county. This is the largest contract of its kind and covers over 100 different treatment centres. G4S Integrated Services won the contract in April 2006.
Only 60% of the incumbent staff transferred to G4S, so as part of our managed mobilisation project we carried out a large-scale recruitment drive to ensure that a full complement of 160 staff was available at the start of the service.
The contract covers 220,000 patient journeys per year for out-patients, discharges, admissions, and inter-hospital transfers and covers provision of transport services to:

Six major Acute Hospital Trusts

A county-wide Mental Health Trust
-
A specialist Trust for cancer patients
-
A specialist Trust for those requiring limb fitting.
The service is controlled from three G4S control centres in Surrey during the core operational hours, and the 24-hour control room in Dorking during out of hours. This control room also acts as the out of hours control for all other G4S patient transport contracts.
G4S worked closely with the Primary Care Trust to reduce the number of inappropriate patient journeys and extra contractual journeys, and have carried out a series of roadshows at the acute hospitals to make patients and staff more aware of the information that is required to ensure that the service is provided economically and effectively.
