G4S Secure Solutions (UK) has been working with Bristol Water PLC since 1996, to provide an integrated security solution. Based in Bristol the contract provides SIA licensed trained and fully qualified personnel for the purpose of securing the Head Office and Operational sites of Bristol Water PLC.
G4S Secure Solutions (UK) Ltd, the leading security company in the UK has been working with Bristol Water PLC since September 1996 to secure the Head Office and Operational sites in the Bristol area.
G4S’s key objective is to protect these sites from unauthorised intrusion, theft and criminal damage.
Solution
G4S has created a tailored security solution for Bristol Water. A team of eight skilled staff, who are all SIA licensed, carry out a number of duties across the sites;
Head Office
During the day two security officers are based at Bristol Water’s Head Office. Their key objective is to protect the sites from unauthorised intrusion, theft, criminal damage, business interruption and indiscipline by contractors or visitors.
Their main duties include:
Locking and unlocking of the building and gates
Setting up the alarm system on site at the required time
Patrolling the premises to deter trespassers and to check for signs of trespass or damage
Fire clearance officer duties
Distribution of mail and courier deliveries
Performing weekly fire alarm tests
Monitoring CCTV
Car park management
Out of hours callout
Providing a reassurance presence for staff working late.

Regional depot Two security officers provide additional security services at Bristol Water’s regional depot. They deliver the following duties:
Meet and greet and reception duties
Setting up the alarm system on site at the required time
Patrolling the premises to deter trespassers and to check for signs of trespass or damage
Mail deliveries Assisting with fire alarm tests
Locking and unlocking of the building and gates
Monitoring CCTV
Car park management
Providing a reassurance presence for staff working late.
Mobile response officers
G4S provides mobile response officers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These officers would be required to patrol Bristol Water’s estate, including treatment works, reservoirs and pumping stations. Their responsibilities include:
Responding to any on site system failures
Responding to alarms within 60 minutes of activation and initiating the appropriate response
Administering access control for contractors to unmanned sites
Basic testing of access control systems.
Security / Store person
This is a new duty, set at Bristol Water’s Logistics Centre, introduced by G4S at Bristol water’s request to further enhance service delivery. Daily duties are still being reviewed but the officer currently covers the following duties whilst being trained in stores management:
Providing service to staff requiring the stores services
Locking and unlocking of the building and gates
Setting up the alarm system on site at the required time
Delivery of store goods to other sites within the Bristol Water operational area.
Temporary Work
G4S further support Bristol Water by providing temporary security cover across the operational area at various locations - when long-term works and maintenance is taking place.
Results
Staff are the key asset to this contract, and are seen as representatives of not only G4S but of Bristol Water. The manner in which staff perform tasks and duties required of them is fundamental to the success of the service being delivered to agreed KPIs. It was therefore essential to achieve a partnership between the different roles within the security team; Store person, Mobile Response Officers and Security Officers. In addition, a strong working partnership has been developed between Bristol Water and G4S throughout the contract period.
Since the commencement of the contract, G4S has provided a fully managed service to the customer. By employing a team of fully trained and qualified front-line staff to operate and protect the sites, the customer can concentrate fully on the core operational running of their business.
