Police Secure Logistics
We provide a dedicated courier service to ensure that essential documents, evidence, samples and files are in the right place at the right time
Overview
G4S operates a dedicated courier service for the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, covering a large geographical area in the South West. Each day separate G4S couriers collect and deliver a huge variety of items to and from police premises across the region. G4S has been operating this significant contract for eight years.
Challenge
The nature of the work being undertaken means that the pick up and delivery of many of the items are time critical, as they may be needed in court the same day. Items include:
- DNA samples
- Narey files
- Scenes of crime evidence
This means that efficient planning is required to meet all the critical needs of this busy force. Regular contact with the customer is also essential, as their requirements can and do change daily.
Our services
The specialist driving team is managed by a dedicated G4S Supervisor, who acts as an interface between Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, G4S, local contract managers and the courier team.
Each day seven separate runs set off from Plymouth and Exeter, visiting every police station in the region. Our team of thirteen officers collect, deliver and transport items varying in size, shape and weight: altogether providing a seamless service. Our fleet of five vehicles travels a collective distance of approximately 500,000 miles per year, moving up to 60,000 items per week.
As the service relies on vehicle transportation, flexibility and the ability to overcome unforeseen problems, such as vehicle breakdown, inclement weather and tourist traffic, is fundamental.
Regular vehicle servicing and planning is also required as they are only resting for short periods. The drivers must also have the ability to ‘think on their feet and to overcome any issues that may present a problem to the service.
Results
The courier team demonstrates complete dedication and professionalism. This led to them being named ‘Best Team’ in the G4S Security Officer of the Year 2007 awards programme for their exceptional consistency and record in delivering practically every item on time and without fail. This dedication to their responsibilities led to delivery failure of only 10 items in 2007, so few as to be deemed negligible by the customer.
"G4S has a proven ability in this field that has resulted in the existing contract being extended to 2010. Operations Manager Terry Jones and his team of drivers are unsurpassed at keeping the deliveries flowing in almost all circumstances, and are to be highly commended in their loyalty, dedication and diligence. G4S Contract Manager Paul Betts has every reason to be proud of Terry and the team".
