Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre rated outstanding by Ofsted after surprise inspection06 June 2011
• Centre commended for being ‘calm and relaxed’
• Young people all engaged in ‘purposeful activities’
• Resettlement scheme praised as an ‘excellent initiative’
G4S today welcomed Ofsted’s decision to award Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre an ‘outstanding’ quality rating, following an unannounced two-day inspection in April. The announcement means that all three centres managed by G4S continue to be rated outstanding.
Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre (STC) near Rugby, is managed by G4S Care & Justice Services, and looks after young people aged from 12-17 years old, who either require a custodial sentence, or are on remand to a secure setting. The centre can accommodate 57 young men and 30 young women, and has the country’s only dedicated mother and baby unit which can accommodate four mothers and their babies. At the time of the inspection 81 young people were in residence.
The report found the centre ‘calm and relaxed’ with all the young people engaged in purposeful activities during the days and evenings. Young people were found to be ‘well supported’ by the managers and staff who ‘clearly put their best interests at the centre of planning delivery of service’.
The report highlighted Rainsbrook’s efforts to help young people resettle into their communities on release, and an open day held for youth offending teams to encourage young people to continue to develop interests and skills in their communities, was hailed as ‘an excellent initiative’ by the inspectors.
A ‘key strength’ remarked on by the inspectors was the ‘management of challenging and at times difficult young people’, and there was evidence that the centre not only effectively managed behaviour but also worked with young people to help then find alternative ways of channelling their frustration and dealing with anger.
As an interim inspection, the report dealt assessed mainly how the centre protected children from harm or neglect and helped them stay safe. The inspectors praised the ‘excellent safety and security measures’ at Rainsbrook, and commented on the ‘outstanding’ relationships between the staff and the young people, with staff ‘extremely good at engaging with young people’.
Rainsbrook Director Vincent Raymond, said:
“We’re delighted to have achieved this ‘outstanding’ rating from Ofsted, which reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff.
“At Rainsbrook we focus on providing a healthy, safe, secure and caring environment for every child and we’re pleased that the report recognises this. We are also satisfied that our work helping young people resettle when they return to their community and avoid reoffending is winning recognition.
“An outstanding rating is good news for us, but far better for the young people in our care, who we hope will benefit from improved outcomes for their future.”
